The Power of Children’s Praises
In Matthew 21:15-16, we witness the chief priests and scribes, utterly astonished, as children boldly shout in the temple, “Hosanna to the Son of David!” Jesus powerfully counters their objections by referencing scripture: “Out of the mouth of infants and nursing babies you have prepared praise.” This moment powerfully underscores not only the profound capacity for worship that children possess but also the all-too-common tendency of adults to overlook their immense spiritual potential.
The term "children" in this scripture speaks to those undergoing intentional training, a deliberate upbringing aimed at crafting devoted worshippers of God. In their purity and sincerity, children unleash emotional expressions of worship that, despite lacking articulation, resonate with a profound spiritual connection. Their cries reflect the truth found in Romans 8:26-27—that the Spirit intercedes when we are unsure of how to pray. This powerful truth holds true for our children as well.
I am deeply impacted by the significance of the term “mouth” in this verse, which is also interpreted as “the point of a sword.” Children’s mouths can be as sharp and potent as a double-edged sword (Psalm 8:2, Proverbs 18:21). Their words carry profound spiritual authority. Psalm 127:4 reminds us that children are like arrows in the hands of warriors—blessed is the one who raises them!
To all parents, grandparents, teachers, church leaders, and those who influence children—take heart! God has equipped us with His Word as a powerful strategy to raise worshippers. It is essential that we intentionally cultivate children in the ways of the Lord, fostering a vibrant community of prayer, worship, and praise in every home. Together, we will raise an army of spiritual champions who worship in spirit and in truth! (John 4:23)
Action Step: Seek God’s guidance as you nurture the faith of children under your influence. Encourage them to use their voices as instruments of praise and prayer, echoing the heart of the Father, and declaring His Word with confidence as a weapon in their mouths. Together, we will establish altars of worship in our homes, communities, and churches.
